10X Coaching for Entrepreneurs: Why Thinking Bigger and simplifying Your Business Changes Everything

Tuesday, September 02, 2025

"Most entrepreneurs never reach their true potential because they chase incremental growth instead of exponential change."

That one sentence sums up what I've learned in twenty-plus years of building businesses and coaching high achievers. We often believe that doubling our results (2X) is ambitious, but in reality that mindset keeps us trapped in a cycle of doing more of the same and getting only marginal improvement. When you switch your lens to 10X growth, when you set goals so big that your current way of working becomes irrelevant, something powerful happens: you start removing instead of adding. You narrow your focus to what actually moves the needle.

In this post, I want ot share how the principles behind 10X Is Easier Than 2X and The Science of Scaling can transform the way you think, act and build your business. These ideas underpin my 12-Week 10X Entrepreneur Coaching Program, a program that I designed to help entrepreneurs, high achievers and small business owners create clarity, simplicity and scale. Why "10X Is Easier Than 2X" Isn't Just a CAtch Book Title

A few years ago, Dr. Benjamin Hardy sent me an advance copy of the book he wrote with Dan Sullivan, 10X Is Easier Than 2X: How World-Class Entrepreneurs Achieve More By Doing Less. At first glance the title sounds like hype. How can ten times growth possibly be easier than doubling?  But as I dug into it, the logic resonated with my own entrepreneurial journey. The authors argue that 10X growth forces you to let go of 80% of what you're doing and focus only on the 20% that creates the biggest results. In other words, you achieve more by doing less, but it's the right "less" that's important.

As I reflected on my own businesses, I saw how many responsibilities I had taken on that weren't mine to keep. I was like many entrepreneurs, trying to wear too many hats and, as a result, it slowed my growth and my work was scattered. This is something I see all the time. As entrepreneurs we pride ourselves on being busy, but busyness isn't progress. When you adopt a 10X mindset you stop asking, "How can I do more?" and start asking, "What should I never do again?" That shift allows you to pour your energy into your unique ability - the activities that make the biggest difference and that you can do better than anyone else.

The 10X approach also emphasizes the 80/20 principle, which states that 80% of results come from 20% of efforts. In 10X Is Easier Than 2X, Hardy and Sullivan encourage entrepreneurs to identify their 20%, their unique abilities, and invest 100% of their attention there. For me, it meant saying "no" to some good opportunities so I could say "yes" to the great ones.

The Science of Scaling: Simplicity Is the Real Growth Engine

If 10X Is Easier Than 2X gives you permission to think bigger, Dr. Benjamin Hardy's follow-up book The Science of Scaling hands you the blueprint. Many entrepreneurs set goals that are too small and, in doing so, build systems that are too complex. Complexity is the enemy of scale. Hardy introduces three pillars - Frame, Floor and Focus - to simplify how you grow.

  • Frame your goals so big that it acts as a filter. When you set an impossible goal, most of what you currently do becomes irrelevant, and your focus naturally narrows. For example, if your impossible goal is to triple your revenue while working fewer hours, tasks like micromanaging your email won't survive that filter. Your goal defines what you see.
  • Raise the Floor by eliminating anything that doesn't belong in your system. Hardy notes that you can't scale what's not focused. This means letting go of low-leverage activities, distracting opportunities and even clients who don't fit your vision. For a long time I was trying to serve everyone. When I finally defined who my programs were really for - growth-minded entrepreneurs - it became easier to say "no" and free up space for the right people.
  • Focus on the few activities with massive upside. Once the noise is gone, you can channel your attention and resources toward building systems and partnerships that scale without your constant involvement. This is where you move from being the bottleneck to being the leader of a scalable business.

Hardy's book also delivers a tough love message: If you're not scaling, you're slowly dying That may sound harsh, but it highlights the reality that businesses caught in the status quo are losing ground. Growth isn't just a bout revenue; it's about creating systems that deliver consistent customer value, improve retention and make your company resilient.

The High Price of Diluted Focus

One of my favorite reminders comes from productivity expert Rory Vaden: "If you have diluted focus, you will get diluted results." Think about that for a moment. How often have you agreed to an extra project, a new marketing channel or a "quick favor" when you knew deep down it wasn't aligned with your biggest goals? I'm guilty too. But diluted focus is the enemy of exponential growth. In my coaching practice I've seen clients who were managing three or four competing ventures at once. None of them were thriving. As soon as they committed to one impossible goal and closed the door on the others, their progress accelerated.

This aligns with Hardy's idea that an impossible goal is so high that almost nothing you're currently doing is relevant. It's not that your existing skills ar useless; it's that the level of impact you're aiming for requires a different set of priorities. When my clients set a goal to go from six figures to seven, or to double their impact in a fraction of the time, their daily to-do list shrinks dramatically. We eliminate busywork and design a new "floor" of minimum standards that matches their future vision.

Why Entrepreneurs Fail to Scale (and How Science Can help)

Mark Roberge, former CRO of HubSpot and co-founder of Stage 2 Capital, spent years studying startup failures and concluded that most businesses struggle because they scale haphazardly rather than scientifically. The most common missteps he found include focusing on revenue at the expense of consistent customer value, lacking a data-driven definition of product-market fit, front-loading sales hires too early and confusing temporary advantages with sustainable ones.

Roberge's "Science of Scaling" framework also breaks scale into three sequential stages: Product-Market Fit, Go-to-Market Fit and Growth & Moat. In simple terms, you first need evidence that your product solves a real problem and retains customers. Then you ensure your go-to-market model generates customer success consistently and scalably. Only then do you accelerate growth. His research shows that healthy growth isn't about chasing triple-digit revenue at all costs; it's about prioritizing customer retention and long-term sustainability. This scientific lens complements the mindset work for 10X thinking: you need both vision and operational discipline.

How the 10X Coaching Program Works

The 10X Coaching for Entrepreneurs Program is designed for entrepreneurs who are serious about simplifying, focusing and scaling. Here's how it works:

10X Coaching for Entrepreneurs: The Science of Scaling

1. Define Your Future Self & Impossible Goal

In week 1 we go deep on vision. You'll articulate your Future Self - the entrepreneur you want to become in one, three and ten years. We use my "seven layers deep" exercise to uncover your true motivations, then craft an "impossible goal" that excites and scares you. this goal becomes the filter for every decision you make. I've had clients set goals like doubling revenue while having their hours or launching a new product line that outshines the flagship. The key is that the goal forces you to rethink everything.

2. Eliminate the 80%

In week 2 we apply the 80/20 rule. We audit your tasks, projects and commitments to identify the 20% that drives results and the 80% that doesn't. We create an "elimination plan" to stop doing, delegate or automate the non-essential tasks. When a client who ran a marketing agency did this, she realized she was spending hours on low-margin services that could be packaged or outsourced Eliminating those freed her to focus on high-value strategy work.

3. Raise Your Floor and Build Simple Systems

Weeks 3-6 focus on operational simplicity. We raise your "floor" by setting minimum standards for how you operate, the clients you accept and the projects you pursue. We also build systems that anyone on your team can duplicate so that your business isn't dependent on. your daily involvement. For example, one founder created a sales process document and training video. Within two months he hired a new sales lead who followed the system and doubled conversion rates.

4. Leverage Constrains and Focus on High-Impact Activities

In the second half of the program (weeks 7-9) we treat constrains as fuel for creativity. Maybe you have limited capital, a small team or only fifteen hours per week to work on your business. Instead of letting those constraints frustrate you, we use them to force innovation. We also identify your "10X leverage points" - activities that produce disproportionate results. For many entrepreneurs, these include building partnerships, designing scalable offers or investing in their leadership skills.

5. Integrate, Reflect and Scale

The final weeks (10-12) are about integration. We review what worked, refine your systems and set new 10X goals. (We move to the 20% of your 20%!) We want you to leave this program not only with a clearer path to scale but also with a transformed identity. You will be a leader, not an operator. You'll make decisions based on who you want to become rather than who you've been.

Actionable Takeaways You Can Use Today

You don't have to wait to join the program to start applying these princples Try these three exercises this week:

  • Write down an impossible goal that makes your current strategies irrelevant. If it doesn't scare you at least a little, it's not big enough.
  • Create your Not-To-Do List - audit your task list and circle the top three activities that generate most of your results. Start saying "no" to anything outside that circle. Decide the things on your list that you need to eliminate, delegate or automate.
  • Identify one system in your business that causes friction Ask yourself: How can I simplify it so someone else can run it without me?

These small steps can create immediate clarity. When you see the impact of removing instead of adding, you'll understand why 10X is genuinely easier than 2X.

The Mindset Shift: From Hustling to Aligning

Entrepreneurs wear busyness like a badge of honor. Yet busyness often masks lack of clarity. After reading The Science of Scaling I stopped glorifying hustle. My biggest breakthrough was learning to ask: "What should I never do again?" I realized my true job as a coach is to help entrepreneurs align with their Future Self, not keep them spinning plates.

If you're like most of the high achievers that I coach, you don't need another productivity hack. You need a new lens. You need to commit to an impossible goal, narrow your focus to high-impact activities and build systems that free you to lead. You  deserve a business that scales with you instead of draining you.

Final thoughts and Your Next Step

Thinking bigger isn't about adding more - it's about becoming more. Whether you're stuck at a plateau, overwhilmed by opportunities or simply hungry for growth, the 10X Coaching for Entrepreneurs Program can help you reclaim your time, clarify your vision and build a business that scales.
