“Adversity’s fine, because you’re gonna have it. Not everything’s gonna go perfect, but your ability to persevere and understand that setbacks don’t determine where you end up—that’s what makes the difference.” — Coach Dave Christensen
In this episode of Challenger Deep: Athletes Rising Above Adversity, we sit down with veteran football coach Dave Christensen, author of Your 4th Down – Why You Need to Go For It. Coach Christensen shares powerful lessons from decades on the sidelines, reflecting on adversity, leadership, and why pushing forward when the odds are against you is the only way to win.
When Coach Christensen joined us, he was in the middle of recovering from ankle replacement surgery. Even in the face of physical setbacks, his attitude reflected the same grit and resilience that defined his coaching career. He spoke candidly about the frustration of setbacks, the slow process of recovery, and the importance of patience during times of difficulty. For him, these moments are no different than the challenges he faced on the field: the ability to keep showing up, even when progress feels slow, is what ultimately brings success.
Christensen’s story is a reminder that adversity does not discriminate. Whether you’re an athlete fighting through injury, an entrepreneur working through business challenges, or someone battling personal setbacks, adversity will always appear. The key lesson he emphasized is that our response determines the outcome. Choosing resilience, leaning on discipline, and refusing to give up are what allow us to grow stronger through trials.

Now you can rep the mindset both on and off the court. Whether you're a basketball player grinding through adversity or an athlete showing up with purpose, our apparel is designed to remind you—and everyone around you—what you're about. It's Not Just What You Wear. It's Who You Are!

During his tenure as Offensive Coordinator at Missouri, Christensen’s high-powered offenses became some of the most dynamic in college football. His fast-paced, no-huddle approach broke school records and pushed defenses to their limits. He recalled the pressure of implementing an unproven system at the time, and how the willingness to innovate led to long-term success. Taking risks, he explained, is no different than facing 4th down—you can choose to play it safe, or you can push forward with courage.
This philosophy didn’t just change games; it transformed careers. His players, from quarterbacks to linemen, grew within a system that demanded preparation, adaptability, and confidence. Christensen drew a clear parallel for listeners: innovation isn’t only for football—it’s for life. Success in any field requires the willingness to go against the grain, trust your preparation, and execute boldly when the opportunity comes.
As head coach at Wyoming, Christensen faced uphill battles, from building a program with limited resources to navigating the intense pressure of Division I football. Leadership in those moments wasn’t about celebrating wins—it was about guiding young men through adversity, keeping them focused when everything seemed stacked against them. He explained that the true measure of a leader is not how they act when things go smoothly, but how they respond when things fall apart.
Christensen also discussed the loneliness of leadership, the criticism that comes with every decision, and the resilience required to stand firm. His perspective is one that resonates with more than just coaches; it applies to anyone in a position of influence. Leaders must be steady, consistent, and willing to shoulder challenges for the sake of their team. In life and business, as in football, storms are inevitable—but strong leadership provides the anchor.
One of Christensen’s passions has always been preparing athletes for life beyond the game. He stressed that football is a mental game just as much as a physical one. The discipline, toughness, and mindset that players develop on the field prepare them for challenges in their careers, families, and communities. He shared stories of helping athletes push past mental blocks, teaching them to dig deeper when they felt they had nothing left.
For Christensen, the mental side of preparation is what separates good athletes from great ones—and good leaders from exceptional ones. He emphasized that adversity, setbacks, and failure are part of life’s playbook, and the ability to reframe those moments as growth opportunities is what creates champions. These principles extend well beyond athletics, offering practical wisdom for entrepreneurs, professionals, and anyone pursuing ambitious goals.

The heart of Christensen’s message is also the title of his book: Your 4th Down – Why You Need to Go For It. Life presents everyone with 4th-down moments—times when fear or doubt say, “play it safe.” Christensen argues that true growth comes when we push forward, even in uncertainty. He reminded listeners that every major breakthrough, whether in sports, business, or personal life, comes after taking a risk. Playing it safe may protect you in the moment, but it rarely leads to transformation.
He challenges us to reflect on our own 4th downs. Where in life are we holding back? Where are we punting when we should be going for it? His call to action is clear: success requires courage, and courage is built when we step into the unknown. Whether you are facing a career decision, a personal challenge, or an athletic pursuit, Christensen’s message is the same—go for it.
