Bold Journey: An Interview with Jeff Heggie

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jeff Heggie a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jeff, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I’ve always been fortunate to have great mentors and coaches in my life that have helped me to develop my confidence.

In The Confident Athlete Program I tell our athletes that the skills, discipline, and habits you develop as an athlete will stick with you through the rest of your life. I attribute many of my core values today to the coaches that instilled them into me as a young athlete.

I focus on a number of different areas with my athletes and entrepreneurs to help them develop their confidence and self-esteem, but for myself there are some specific things that stick out in my mind that have helped me to develop it.

I was always taught by my parents and coaches the value of hard work and dedication. By watching my older brother I was able to see the successful results that could be achieved when you set goals for yourself and worked hard to achieve them.

This all ties in with preparation. It’s difficult to have a high level of confidence when you know that you have not done what is required to be prepared. But when you’re fully committed and have put in the work and the effort to achieve your goals, there’s a level of confidence you have because you know you’ve done what it takes.

One specific time that stands out in my mind comes from my days as a cowboy. I was a steer wrestler and the rodeo season had come to an end. The top contestants from that season were all competing in the finals to determine the champion.

I had had a good season, put in a lot of practice and had worked hard. When it came to competing in the finals I had no doubt that I was going to win. I had done everything I could to prepare myself for this situation, I felt like I deserved to win, and I did.

I’ve carried this with me throughout my life. When I’ve put in the proper preparation, I can perform with confidence. That doesn’t mean that everything always works out like I plan on it to, but I can still act with confidence.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

My entire life I’ve had a passion for athletics and entrepreneurship. Today, I’m fortunate to have both of them in my life.

I played a number of different sports growing up, but basketball and rodeo were the ones I really loved. I had the opportunity to rodeo professionally for a number of years and continue with my love of basketball with 20+ years of coaching.

Today, I still have the opportunity to be involved with a number of athletes at different levels and in different sports. Along with my partner, Tami Matheny, we run The Confident Athlete Program ( that helps athletes build and maintain confidence. Athletes put a lot of time, money, and effort into the physical part of their sport. The mental game is just as important, but is often neglected. We help athletes reach their full potential by teaching them how to maximize their mental game.

On the entrepreneur side, I’ve had many different opportunities, including a manufacturing company in the real estate industry that I started from scratch and ran for 16 years. I’ve invested in real estate through residential real estate and mini-storage facilities. From all of these experiences I’ve also had many opportunities to coach and mentor other entrepreneurs.

Today my focus is on real estate and coaching. I help other entrepreneurs through The Entrepreneur Coaching Group ( I also work with a life-long friend as a real estate investor where our current focus is in Wichita, Little Rock, Knoxville, and Dallas. Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

If I were to identify three of the most impactful skills in my life that I would encourage others to adopt, they would be network, goals, and accountability.

Proximity Is Power
Your network, the people you surround yourself with, really does matter. You become like those who you spend the most time with. You must surround yourself with people who will support and encourage you to dream big and to chase those dreams.

Imagine being excited about some big goals that you’ve set for yourself and you share them with two different friends. The first friend laughs at you and asks why you think you could do something like that and tells you to be realistic. The second friend congratulates you on setting big goals and maybe even encourages you to set bigger goals because those ones will be too easy for you.

Which friend will help you to stay focused on your goals until you achieve them?

If you want to achieve big things in life, spend your time with people who are achieving big things in their life.

Set Big Goals
It’s hard to get somewhere if you don’t know your destination. Stephen Covey said, “Begin with the end in mind.”

Without a destination, or goal, it’s hard to keep moving forward. When you set a big goal for yourself and truly understand you purpose, or your why, behind that goal, then you can chase it.

Once you’ve set your goals, the next step is to chunk it down into smaller time frames. If you know what you want to accomplish in a year, what do you have to accomplish month by month to make it happen? Create that plan.

Once you know what you have to accomplish each month to achieve your big goal take the current month and figure out what you have to accomplish each week to achieve that monthly goal. Then break it down into daily goals.

One you take a big goal that may seem almost impossible and break it down into achievable daily goals, then it becomes possible.

Daily Accountability
Now that you have your daily goals, you have to be accountable. You have to find yourself an accountability coach, partner or group that will hold you accountable every single day.

We are overwhelmed with urgent tasks every single day. But if you want to achieve your big goals, you have to make sure that every day you are doing the one thing, the important thing, that will help you get closer to your goal.

In our accountability groups it is very simple. Each person has broken their goals down to their daily “One Thing.” Each day they get on the call and confirm what they committed to the day before and whether or not they did it. Next, they state what their new daily commitment is that they will achieve that day. Regardless of all the urgent things in their life, they commit to get that one important thing done that day.

At the end of the week they can look back and say they have had a successful week and they are closer to their bigger goal.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?

I have a large library and have a lot of different books that have been influential in my life. But recently, Dr. Benjamin Hardy sent me a pre-release copy of the new book he wrote with Dan Sullivan, “10X Is Easier Than 2x.” This book is now available to the public and I highly recommend it.

There are two ideas that have really been impactful to me.

Impossible Goals:

At a Joe Polish mastermind, the question was asked, “If you wanted to improve your profits by 10%, how would you do it?”

After some discussion, Dr. Alan Barnard commented, “This is actually a really bad question.” He went on the explain that there are literally infinite things you could do to increase your profits by 10% and the goal isn’t big enough to create focus and specificity. He said that it would be better to ask, “If you wanted to grow your profits by ten times, how would you do it?”

He went on to explain that to achieve 10X growth, almost nothing would work. When looking at an “impossible goal,” Dr Barnard said you would need to ask yourself, “That goal would be impossible, unless what?” What conditions would have to be true to achieve it?

Once those conditions and strategies are identified, then that is where you must give all your focus and effort. This leads to the next concept of 80/20.

Focus on the 20%

As Dr. Barnard explains his concept of “impossible goals,” we see that to achieve such big goals, not only are there specific conditions and strategies that have to be met, but most of what we are currently doing will not help us achieve those goals.

Benjamin Hardy goes on to explain that “20 percent of your focus is producing 80 percent of your best and most desired results.”

With a clear goal, you can define the 20 percent that will effectively get you there and the 80 percent that’s taking you some other direction.

The point is, if we want to achieve “impossible goals” we have to let go of most of the things we do and focus on the 20% that will help us achieve our goals.
